Meet our Summer 2022 Intern
Evan Liu is one of our 2022 Summer Interns and a rising third-year at UCSD.
What talent are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my ability to write in what I think is a neat way. Even though I take longer to write things out, I feel a lot of fulfillment when the things I write look tidy.
Do you know your Meyers-Briggs?
ISFP, but in high school I was definitely an INFJ.
What are your pet peeves?
You know that squeaking sound that mechanical pencils make when you press down on paper? There's a reason I only ever use wood pencils...
Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert?
Introverted beyond all doubt.
Are you an animal person?
Yes! I currently have a Terrier-Mix named Poppy who was the only reason I made it through quarantine, and I'd say I have a pretty good track record taking care of fish too.
What's your favorite TV show to binge watch?
Most recently I've been binge watching Breaking Bad, mostly because whenever I tell someone that I haven't seen the whole thing yet all I get is looks of disgust.
What's your favorite meal to cook yourself?
I know it's not very fancy, but in my experience there aren't a lot of things more quick or satisfying than a midnight omelette. Sometimes I don't add anything but egg, but it still turns out to be just what I need!
What kinds of book do you enjoy reading?
I really enjoy reading memoirs and other reflective nonfiction books, sometimes because I'm wondering about some of the same things the authors are writing about but mostly just because people have such interesting perspectives about everything.
What places are on your travel bucket list?
My favorite vacation destination to date has been Tokyo, but when I went the first time I was too young to appreciate the things I saw and did. I definitely want to go back someitme soon!
Do you prefer to fly or drive when you travel?
Probably flying, getting through airport security is pretty annoying but otherwise it's nice not to have to think about the road or parking.
Where would you move to if you could bring your friends and family with you?
I actually feel really blessed to be able to live where I do now, and I don't think I would want to move anywhere else anytime soon.
What was the best date you ever went on?
I'm afraid I don't have much experience in the dating department...
Who is your favorite celebrity?
I'm a huge fan of actor Donnie Yen, who stars in a bunch of martial arts movies like Ip Man and 14 Blades. He was also in Rogue One and John Wick 4, and I was super happy to see his talents recognized even beyond classic Chinese movies!
What subjects did you most enjoy in school?
I always enjoyed my computer science classes the most. All of them were very challenging in different ways, and I always left the classes feeling prepared to use the technologies we learned about even outside of the classroom.
What did you enjoy most about your last job?
I felt really fulfilled being able to work in a position where I could serve the people in my community in a meaningful way. Sometimes it's hard to see how something like computer science can actually help people improve their living situations, but my last job showed me that no matter where you find yourself there will always be ways to help people with what you know.
